Savings Goal Timeline Calculator

Estimate how long your savings goal may take, how much interest you could earn, and how much to set aside each month to reach a specific deadline.

1. Set your savings goal

Enter a target and what you already have saved. Use a positive interest rate only if you reasonably expect to earn one.

Used only in your results and CSV.
With 0% inflation, this stays a fixed dollar target.
Money already available for this goal.
Assumed constant throughout the plan.
APY already includes compounding; not a promised rate.
0% for a fixed cash target. Positive values raise the target over time.

2. Choose your deadline

Compare your current savings plan with a target month. The calculator will estimate the monthly deposit required to reach it.

Choose a future month, up to 50 years away.
Beginning-of-month deposits earn that month’s interest.

How the estimate works: APY is converted to an equivalent monthly growth rate, (1 + APY)1/12 − 1. Deposits and interest are modeled monthly, before income taxes, fees or withdrawals. If you enter inflation, the goal is treated as today’s purchasing power and grows each month.

How to calculate a savings goal timeline

First, enter your starting balance, regular monthly deposit, goal amount and an estimated APY. The calculator converts APY to an equivalent monthly interest rate: r = (1 + APY)1/12 − 1, expressed using APY as a decimal. It simulates interest and deposits until your projected balance meets the goal.

If inflation is above zero, the target at month n is today’s goal × (1 + inflation)n/12. For a fixed-dollar purchase, set inflation to zero. To estimate the monthly contribution for your selected deadline, the calculator reverses the compound-growth formula for that number of months.

Monthly deposits are assumed identical, the APY constant, and money left untouched. Actual APY can change, and institutions may calculate interest daily, compound it on a different schedule, impose fees or taxes, or apply minimum balance requirements. Results are estimates, not guaranteed account balances.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between APY and APR?

APY incorporates compounding over one year. An interest rate labeled APR does not necessarily include compounding in the same way. Enter a savings account’s APY here, not a loan APR.

Can the calculator estimate savings with no interest?

Yes. Set APY to 0%. With a fixed goal and no interest, the time depends entirely on your starting balance and monthly deposits.

Why does inflation make the savings goal increase?

If the target represents goods or services priced in today’s dollars, inflation may raise the future amount needed. Set inflation to 0% when your target is already a fixed nominal dollar amount.

What if I cannot reach the goal within the calculated period?

The calculator searches up to 100 years. If the modeled balance does not reach the target in that period, it shows that the goal is not reached under those assumptions. This does not imply the goal is mathematically impossible forever.

How is the monthly savings requirement calculated?

The calculator estimates the fixed monthly deposit required to reach your inflation-adjusted target by the chosen month, after growth on your current savings. It rounds the required deposit up to the nearest cent.
